Chapter 696
Sebastian immediately pinched his nose at the stench and decided not to chase after Adrian. With the police involved, if Adrian was indeed guilty of murder, he would face a thorough investigation and trial.
Even if the murder charge didn’t stick, the medical malpractice in the operating room was enough to land Adrian in legal trouble.
The police, experienced as they were, tolerated the smell and restrained Adrian. Terrified, Adrian started babbling incoherently and ended up confessing.
“I didn’t kill him! I swear, it wasn’t on purpose. It was my father! He tried to hit me, and I just pushed him away! I didn’t mean for him to die. I was only defending myself, not committing murder, right? You can’t arrest me for that!”
Adrian’s words were contradictory, but in his panic, he didn’t realize he was admitting to the crime.
The medical staff emerging from the operating room were shocked.
“So the dean hasn’t been missing because of illness? It’s because you killed him, your own father?”
“No! I didn’t kill anyone! Shut up! If you don’t, I’ll make sure you all regret it. I’ll have you fired, and you’ll never practice medicine again!”
Adrian’s eyes were wild with anger, but the tide had turned against him.
The assistant doctor spoke up first. “You don’t have to fire me. I’ll resign myself! I can’t stay in such a disgraceful place!”
“Exactly. I’d rather find another job than work for someone like you. We didn’t go through all those years of medical school just to be associated with a criminal!”
One by one, the medical staff announced their resignations.
Adrian’s face flushed with fury, but before he could say anything more, the police stepped in and dragged him away.
The hospital corridor fell silent.
The staff began heading toward Human Resources to submit their resignations when Melody hurriedly called out to them.
“Wait, everyone! Don’t leave just yet.”
They stopped and turned to face her.
“Miss Fox, we let you down earlier. We didn’t stand up for you when we should have. We’re truly sorry!”
“I’m sorry!” they all echoed.
Melody smiled. “It’s in the past. You stood up for me in the end, and that’s what matters.”
They nodded, feeling even more guilty.
Melody continued, “I heard you’re all planning to resign. If you haven’t found a new job yet, I’d like to invite you to join Herbathrive. We’re short on staff, and I’d be happy to have you on board.”
Their eyes lit up with hope.
“Really, Miss Fox? You’d take us in?”
Melody nodded. “It’s not really taking you in. It’s more like poaching.”
They laughed, and many agreed to join Herbathrive the next day.
After setting a time to meet, Melody returned to the entrance of the operating room.
There, Sebastian was thanking Ken. When Sebastian saw Melody, his face was full of guilt.
“Miss Fox, I owe you an apology. I’ve been so blind, misunderstanding you over and over. You have every right not to forgive me, but please accept this as compensation.”
Sebastian gestured, and a bodyguard stepped forward with a brown paper bag, handing it to Melody.
“What’s this?” she asked, puzzled.
“It’s a token of my sincerity,” Sebastian explained. “It’s a portion of our family’s business in Silverlake. I know it’s not much, but I insist. If you don’t accept it, I won’t be able to move past my guilt. Please, take it as a gift for saving Sid’s life twice.”
Melody hesitated. “I saved Sid because he’s my friend, not for this.”
“I understand, but this is different. If word got out, people would think I, Sebastian Quant, don’t know how to repay kindness. Please, accept it.”
Under Sebastian’s insistence and Ken’s encouragement, Melody reluctantly accepted the brown paper bag.
Sebastian then patted Ken on the shoulder. “If you ever need the Quant family’s help, don’t hesitate to ask. I’ve been too prejudiced in the past. That was my mistake, but I won’t make it again.”
Ken shook his head. “Sebastian, you’re too kind. Sid will always be my friend. I consider you family. Let’s leave the past behind.”
Sebastian nodded and went to thank the Chapman family members.
Ken turned to Melody and asked quietly, “Are you tired?”
Melody stretched her neck and replied honestly, “A little.”
“Then let’s get you home to rest. Dr. Mueller will handle things here, and I’ll have James send more security. No one will have another chance to interfere.”
Before, Janet was able to bring people in because Sebastian didn’t trust Ken and made Ken’s people stay away. But Sebastian wouldn’t be doing that now.
Melody nodded, reassured by Jacob’s presence. After saying her goodbyes to Sebastian, Nickolas Chapman, Warner Chapman, and Jacob, she followed Ken to the car.
Once inside, Ken glanced at the brown paper bag with interest. “Want to see what’s inside?”
Melody was curious too. Although she didn’t expect much since Sebastian’s main business was in Insterimond, not Silverlake, she opened the bag.
What she found inside left her speechless. The assets listed were substantial.
Ken estimated their value with a smile. “If you sell all of this, you’d easily make 2 billion dollars. Looks like you’re a rich woman now. Maybe you should hire a few more bodyguards?”
Melody quickly closed the bag, nervous. “Should I give it back? This is way too much.”
“No need,” Ken reassured her. “To Sebastian, this is nothing compared to his only son.”
“I never realized. If he has so many properties here in Silverlake, I can’t imagine what he has in Insterimond.”
Ken nodded. “The Quant Group may rank below the Swanson Group, but with Sebastian’s private assets, they’re not far apart. He was one of the wealthiest men of his time, almost controlling Halcyon’s economy. But now, he’s getting older. If the empire is to grow, it’ll be up to Sid.”
Chapter 697
“You didn’t just save Sid today. You saved the entire Quant Group, along with the livelihoods of tens of thousands of employees and connected industries. If anything had happened to Sid, the Quant Group, lacking a successor, would have gradually declined. All those people would have lost their jobs. So, you should accept this 2 billion dollars. Compared to Sid’s life, it’s nothing.”
Melody understood Ken’s point.
Sebastian’s family had produced only one child per generation, and none of the extended family members were capable enough to step up. The entire Quant family pinned their hopes on Sid. That’s why Sebastian had once despised Ken so much, fearing he’d lead Sid astray.
“I get it,” Melody said, nodding. “I won’t sell these businesses. I’ll manage them properly.”
Ken reached out to ruffle her hair, his gentle eyes reflecting the softness of her locks.
“Exactly. And if you ever need help managing them, Zack can continue assisting you.”
Melody blushed slightly from the affectionate gesture but felt a twinge of guilt at Ken’s suggestion.
“I’ve been relying on your people so much. If it bothers you, I can find someone else to handle it.”
“Why would it bother me?” Ken frowned, shaking his head. “What kind of person do you think I am? As long as Zack can keep up with his job at Ximber Tech, it doesn’t matter how many side projects he takes on. Don’t worry about the value of these assets. For Zack, managing them is just an extra hour of overtime. He’s more than capable.”
Melody nodded quickly. “In that case, could he take care of Silk Beauty Cosmetics too? Since the bet ended and Silk Beauty Cosmetics became mine, Wilmot has been overseeing it for me.”
At the mention of Wilmot, a flicker of jealousy flashed in Ken’s eyes. But it faded when he remembered that Wilmot hadn’t seen Melody alone since he learned of their marriage.
“He’s been helping you for a while. I’ll treat him to a meal as a thank-you.”
“No need,” Melody said, shaking her head. “He’s helping me, so I should be the one to treat him. Besides, I have another favor to ask of him.”
Ken’s frown deepened.
“What is it that you need him for and not me?”
Melody, oblivious to Ken’s jealousy, answered sincerely, “Zara is going to be on ‘Artist’s Wardrobe 2’ soon. With her current status, the company will likely assign the top stylists to the other hosts first. I plan to ask Wilmot if he could handle Zara’s makeup during filming.”
Ken looked at her intently, thinking, ‘I’ll be content when Melody cares about me the way she cares about Zara!
But if treating Zara well would make Melody happy, then he was all in.
“Then let me handle the sponsorship,” Ken said. “I guarantee the clothes Zara wears on the show will be no less than this.”
Ken made a gesture for one.
Melody’s eyes widened in shock.
“A million dollars?”
Ken shook his head with a chuckle. “Ten million dollars. Do you think they’d be so stingy?”
Melody felt a mix of emotions but managed a composed nod. “Then I’ll thank you on her behalf.”
“It’s my pleasure.” Ken pointed to the back of the car. “You’ve had a long day. Lie down and rest. The chefs at the manor are preparing dinner, so we’ll eat as soon as we get there.”
“…Alright,” she said, closing her eyes. Exhaustion quickly overtook her, and she drifted off to sleep.
In her slumber, she had a strange dream.
She was back in her past life, lying on a cold operating table. She had turned into a transparent mist, hovering over her own body, watching herself vomit blood on the table.
‘What’s happening? Is this a dream?’ Melody thought.
Melody tried to pinch her leg but realized she had no physical body. She looked down and saw Mabel Fox and Yolanda Fox laughing cruelly at her lifeless form.
Mabel, with a sneer, spat disdainfully. “Did you really think you could steal my man from me?”
Yolanda shuddered after laughing. “Good thing she always looked so ugly. If she’d regained her beauty earlier, you might have been in real danger.”
Mabel’s eyes narrowed coldly. “So what if she was beautiful? She’s already dead.”
Even as Mabel spoke, she couldn’t hide her resentment. Melody, once considered unattractive, had transformed into a stunning beauty before her death, overshadowing Mabel, who had been the top socialite in their circle.
“Damn it!”
Mabel cursed and suddenly grabbed a scalpel, raising it to slash at Melody’s face.
Just as the blade was about to strike, the operating room door burst open.
A scream echoed through the room as Ulric Swanson was thrown inside.
Mabel and Yolanda’s eyes widened in shock as Ken stormed in, his expression dark.
“K-Ken?” Mabel stammered, stunned.
Melody, still floating, was equally surprised.
Why was Ken here?
Ken pulled a pistol from his pocket, aiming it at Mabel’s forehead.
But just as he was about to pull the trigger, Ulric, who had been thrown to the ground, lunged at Ken.
“Ken! Watch out!” Melody shouted.
But when she opened her eyes, she realized she was still in the car.
Beside her, Ken looked at her in surprise. “What’s wrong? Did you have a nightmare?”
He felt a bit helpless. ‘Why do I appear in her nightmare instead of in a pleasant dream?’ Ken thought.
Melody, now fully awake, realized it had been just a dream. But something still felt off.
When people dream, they typically don’t realize it is a dream, even when it doesn’t make sense.
‘But if it wasn’t a dream, how can I have returned to the moment of my death?’ Melody thought.
After pondering, she concluded it had to be a dream. There was no way she had actually returned to her past life.
After all, in her past life, she and Ken had been mortal enemies, never meeting face to face. ‘We stood on opposing sides, so how could he have avenged me by killing Mabel?’ Melody thought. ‘I must be a dream. Perhaps humans know so little about dreams, so they can sometimes realize they’re dreaming while in the dream!
It must have been a dream.
Perhaps humans know so little about dreams that they can sometimes realize they’re dreaming while still in the dream.
“Melody?” Ken’s voice, filled with concern, pulled her back to reality.
She smiled faintly and said, “Yes, just a bad dream.”
Chapter 698
Ken asked curiously, “What were you dreaming about? You called my name just now.”
Melody couldn’t tell the truth, so she carefully chose her words. “I dreamt you were in danger, so I was trying to warn you.”
“What kind of danger?”
Melody half-lied, “I dreamed Ulric was going to ambush you from behind.”
Ken lowered his eyes and smiled. “Don’t worry. I’ve got eyes in the back of my head. Not just anyone can sneak up on me.”
Melody wanted to say more but hesitated. In her dream, Ulric’s knife had been only inches away from Ken. If she hadn’t woken up, the knife might have struck him.
Fortunately, it was just a dream. Yet, even knowing that her heart was still racing.
Noticing that Melody seemed unwilling to dwell on the dream, Ken changed the subject. “I got some news while you were sleeping. The old man will be back the day after tomorrow.”
Melody was surprised. “Ulric’s already been locked up. How can he wait until the day after tomorrow to return?”
Ken looked at her intently. “You don’t know the old man very well. Even if Ulric had died, he would still wait to finish his work before coming back for the funeral.”
“That’s unbelievable.” Melody suddenly understood why Ulric was so cold-blooded and selfish. It must run in the family.
It was truly remarkable that Ken turned out the way he did.
When they returned to the manor, Margaret was already asleep. After speaking to the servants, Melody learned that Margaret’s typhoid had completely healed. Melody instructed them to continue giving Margaret traditional medicine for another day before heading to her room to rest.
Just as she entered the room, the door opened, revealing Ken fresh out of the shower, wearing only a white towel that clung to his V-line, exposing the curves of his toned body.
The previous two nights, Ken had worn pajamas after his shower, so she had never encountered this situation before. Startled, she quickly turned away.
Even after turning, Ken’s handsome image remained etched in her mind.
‘Damn it, Melody. Are you really this much of a pervert?’ she thought, cursing herself internally.
Just as she was about to leave, she heard Ken’s voice behind her.
“Um, I forgot to bring my clothes. Could you grab them for me?”
“Well.”
Before Melody could answer, Ken had already retreated to the bathroom.
Left with no choice, she closed the door and walked toward the wardrobe in the bedroom.
The wardrobe was large, but when Melody opened it, she noticed that half of it was filled with clothes in her size.
‘When did Ken prepare these?’ she wondered. She had been worried about having to bring more clothes from Serenity Villa after a few days.
At that moment, Ken’s voice called out from the bathroom.
“Did you find them? The pajamas should be hanging in the upper left corner.”
Melody snapped out of her thoughts and hurriedly searched for the clothes. Sure enough, there was a row of pajamas in various colors hanging in the upper left corner.
She randomly chose a black pair, but then hesitated.
She found the pajamas, but what about the rest of his clothes?
“Um!” Melody cleared her throat and asked, “What about the rest? Where are they?”
Ken understood the hint. “The second drawer on the bottom right.”
Melody opened the second drawer with a flushed face, revealing neatly folded boxers. Ken seemed to prefer solid colors, mostly black and white.
Embarrassed, Melody grabbed a pair and rolled them into a ball. Taking a deep breath, she walked to the bathroom door.
She lightly tapped the frosted glass door.
She could vaguely see a strong figure approaching. A hand slowly reached out, and Melody, her face now completely red, quickly handed over the clothes.
“I’m going for a walk,” she blurted out, then dashed out of the bedroom.
Her heart pounded as she fled the villa. Only when the cool night air hit her face did she feel the heat in her cheeks begin to fade.
‘This can’t go on.’ Melody sighed, taking a deep breath as she wandered aimlessly around the manor.
The manor was vast, measuring in acres. But since she had married into the family before, she was as familiar with the place as with the Fox family, so she wasn’t worried about getting lost.
After walking for a while, Melody felt her heartbeat return to normal. Just as she was about to head back, she noticed a shadowy figure climbing over the manor wall.
“Who’s there?”
She quickly chased after the figure, but they jumped off the wall and disappeared before she could catch up.
By the time she climbed over the wall, the person was long gone. However, she discovered a cluster of powder-like substance near the wall.
She crouched down, rubbed some of the powder between her fingers, and sniffed it cautiously. She quickly recognized it as a homemade poison.
Just then, her phone rang. It was Ken.
“Where did you go for a walk?”
Melody replied seriously, “Come to the west wall quickly. I’ve found something.”
“On my way!” Ken said before hanging up. He soon arrived with James.
Melody had already found a plastic bag and collected as much of the powder as she could, though much of it had mixed with the dirt.
When Ken arrived with his team, she approached him without hesitation. “While I was walking, I saw someone climbing over the wall. I couldn’t catch them, but I found this.”
She held up the bag of powder.
Ken immediately ordered James to patrol the area.
“Take care of yourself,” Ken said before asking, “What is this?”
“It seems to be poison, but the ingredients are too complex to identify by sight. I’ll need to visit Dr. Morgan tomorrow and test it with equipment to determine its toxicity.”
Melody lowered her voice and added, “I suspect this was brought out of the manor by Jennie. I think Ulric told her to make this. Ulric’s arrest was sudden, so she might have taken a risk to retrieve it.”
“Poison.” Ken frowned deeply. “Who is the target?”
“It’s hard to say. It could be you, me, or anyone.”
“But if they wanted to poison us, wouldn’t it have been easier to do it directly?”
As they discussed the possibilities, James returned with his men.
Melody quickly asked, “Did you find anything?”
“We didn’t see anyone, but I checked the surveillance footage near the entrance. The license plate belongs to a car registered to Ulric.”
Melody and Ken exchanged glances, confirming that the person she saw was likely Jennie.
Chapter 699
James Deed continued, “We’ve already sent a car after them based on their route.”
Ken nodded. “Make sure she isn’t aware of being followed. Once you find her location, keep a close watch on her every move.”
“Understood,” James replied and quickly made a call.
Melody was still trying to figure out who Jennie might be planning to poison, but the more she thought about it, the less certain she felt.
“Don’t overthink it,” Ken said, reaching out to touch her face. Noticing how cold her skin was, he frowned. “You’re not dressed warmly enough. Let’s head back. Marfgaret just recovered from her illness, and you don’t want to catch a cold yourself.”
Melody’s cheeks flushed again as Ken’s touch lingered. ‘Why does it seem like ever since I had turned down what seemed like Ken’s confession, he had become more comfortable with these small, intimate gestures?’ Melody thought.
Coughing, Melody covered her mouth, trying to compose herself. “Got it. We can think about it more once we’re back.”
Ken couldn’t help but smile at her flustered reaction.
As they walked back, Ken’s expression grew serious again. He reminded James, “Make sure you catch her and keep a close eye. Report back to me if anything happens.”
“Yes!” James replied firmly.
As Ken walked away, James’s thoughts were a jumble. ‘Damn, Mr. Ken seems really taken with Melody!’
What troubled James even more was how he had once believed Melody wasn’t a good match for Ken. Yet now, James was starting to accept it, almost too easily.
‘What’s happening to me? Have I really started to come around to this?’
*****
Back in her room, Melody felt a slight stuffiness in her nose and decided to take a hot shower. When she emerged, she found Ken asleep on the sofa, a tablet still in his hand, evidence of his exhaustion.
Melody felt tired too, but Ken’s workload was even greater than hers. He woke up early, stayed up late, and sometimes had to help her with her own tasks. It was wearing him down.
She noticed the deep furrow in Ken’s brow and instinctively reached out to smooth it. He always seemed to frown in his sleep.
But suddenly, Ken’s eyes snapped open.
Startled, Melody quickly pulled her hand back, stammering, “I-if you’re tired, you should sleep in bed. There’s always more work to do tomorrow.”
Ken paused for a moment, his vision clearing as he woke fully. Then he smiled slightly and turned off the tablet. “You’re right. I’m exhausted. Let’s go to bed.”
Melody’s ears turned red again.
As she lay in bed, she regretted her reaction. She had been married before. Even though Ulric had never touched her in her previous life, she knew enough. ‘So why am I blushing like a teenager? Ugh. I should get a checkup. Maybe there’s something wrong with my kidneys.
Blushing this easily can be a sign of kidney issues,’ Melody thought.
With these thoughts swirling in her mind, Melody slowly drifted off to sleep.
In her dreams, she once again felt as if her body was floating. When she opened her eyes, she was shocked to find herself back in the operating room where she had died in her previous life.
She had turned into that same transparent fog, watching the mother and daughter below. The same conversation played out, the same plot, the same moment when Ulric attacked Ken from behind.
“No!”
Melody suddenly woke up, staring at the white ceiling of her bedroom. Reaching out, she noticed that Ken, who should have been beside her, was gone, but his pillow was still warm.
Melody was disoriented and shocked. ‘Did I have the same dream again?’ she thought. ‘What are the odds of having the exact same dream twice?’
Just then, she heard the sound of running water from the bathroom.
‘Ken is still here?’
For some reason, she instinctively closed her eyes and pretended to be asleep.
Ken didn’t seem to notice. After coming out of the bathroom, he gently tucked her hand under the blanket and made sure the corners were snug before quietly leaving the room.
Once the door clicked shut, Melody slowly opened her eyes.
That dream was so strange.
But she didn’t have time to dwell on it. After lying in bed for a while longer, she got up to start her day.
Today, she wore a more formal black suit. After bidding farewell to Margaret, she took a car to visit Ander.
Fortunately, Lucas Morgan was home. When he heard she had come to visit, he rushed to greet her despite the butler’s objections.
“Melody!” Lucas beamed as he approached.
Melody looked him over, then asked him to extend his hand.
Lucas obediently held out his hand so she could check his pulse.
A minute later, Melody let go and said, “You’re almost fully recovered.”
Lucas grinned. “Melody, since we agreed before, can I start working at your clinic?”
Melody shook her head. “Even though you’re almost better, your body is still weak. You need to rest a while longer. You shouldn’t be on your feet for too long.”
Lucas looked disappointed but nodded. “I understand. I’ll come as soon as I’m fully recovered.”
He had been so bored since leaving the hospital. The butler wouldn’t even let him go outside, and he felt like he was going stir-crazy. But he knew Melody was right.
“By the way, don’t just stand at the door. Come in and talk.”
Melody nodded, and as she followed Lucas into the Morgan family’s reception hall, she asked, “When are your parents coming back?”
“The conference lasts seven days. Including travel time, it should be another four to five days. Did you need something from them?”
Melody explained the reason for her visit. “Actually, I wanted to borrow your mother’s laboratory. Doesn’t she have equipment at home to analyze chemical compositions? I found a bag of powder that might be poisonous and want to test it.”
“I see. I’ll take you there now.”
“Should we call your mother first?”
“No need!” Lucas waved it off. “Before she left, she said you’re welcome to use the lab anytime. You don’t need to ask her first.”
Melody’s heart warmed at the thought. She smiled. “Thank you.”
“It’s no trouble! Let’s go!”
As they walked, Lucas asked, “Melody, when are you going to have an official meal with us? My parents said they want to formally treat you as their goddaughter.”
Chapter 700
“After that meal, I’ll have a sister!” Lucas exclaimed.
Lucas, who had always been the only child in his family, had longed for a sibling.
When he found out that his parents planned to make Melody their goddaughter, he was overjoyed. Now, he could finally proudly tell others that he had a sister who was an amazing doctor.
Melody scratched her head, embarrassed. “Dr. Morgan was probably just joking. Don’t take it seriously. Even if I’m not your sister, you can always come to me if you’re sick. But, of course, it’s best if you stay healthy.”
“No!” Lucas insisted seriously. “My parents aren’t joking. They’ve even discussed which guests to invite to the official adoption ceremony.”
Melody was stunned. She hadn’t expected Ander and his wife to take the idea so seriously.
In no time, they arrived at the entrance of Zoe’s laboratory.
Lucas said, “Melody, you can go ahead and get to work. I can’t enter my mom’s lab without her permission, so I’ll wait for you outside. We can have dinner together when you’re done.”
Melody quickly replied, “There’s no need for dinner. I need to head back to Herbathrive right after the test. We’re expecting a lot of job applicants today.”
“Alright,” Lucas said, though he sounded disappointed. “Once I’m fully recovered, I’ll come to Herbathrive to see you.”
“Okay.” Melody nodded and entered the laboratory with a cage covered by a black cloth.
She was familiar with the lab, having been there before, and quickly found the equipment she needed. She then removed the black cloth covering the cage, revealing several lively white mice.
“Sorry, little guys, but I might need to use you to save someone else’s life. Maybe in your next life, don’t be lab rats. Actually, life as a human isn’t easy either. Let’s just leave it to fate.” Melody muttered to herself for a couple of minutes before focusing on her research.
About half an hour later, using the lab equipment, Melody identified all the ingredients in the powder. It was a mixture of ground poisonous herbs combined with other toxic substances.
At first glance, the poison seemed ordinary. But after testing it on the mice, Melody’s expression darkened.
The poison was similar to the one Jennie had used on Wendell. Once it completely corroded a person’s body, it left no trace of toxicity behind. Even the most thorough autopsy wouldn’t detect it.
This colorless and odorless poison was terrifyingly effective, disappearing without a trace once it had done its work.
If Jennie had developed this poison on her own, her abilities would have been far more dangerous than Melody had anticipated.
Jennie wasn’t just any malicious doctor. Before the suppression of malicious doctors, Jennie might have been a leader among them.
Melody’s eyes narrowed as she carefully sealed the remaining powder in a bag and left the Morgan estate with the cage.
On the way back, she frowned, making Spencer increasingly anxious, wondering what happened. Spencer didn’t dare to ask what was wrong but drove with heightened caution.
Soon, they arrived at Herbathrive.
Melody first checked on Seventeen, who was still
recovering in bed. Satisfied with his progress, she returned to the front hall.
Herbathrive was still on holiday, so aside from Seventeen and Talia, who was also there, the clinic was unusually quiet, a silence that Melody still hadn’t gotten used to.
Fortunately, the group of doctors and nurses Melody had arranged to meet the day before arrived quickly.
“Miss Fox, we’re here!” they exclaimed.
Melody nodded and asked, “Is everyone here?”
The assistant doctor spoke up first. “Two people couldn’t make it. They decided to interview at Central Hospital instead. So there are just the five of us.”
Melody nodded in understanding. “Modern medicine and traditional medicine are quite different. Working here would be like starting from scratch. If any of you are having second thoughts, it’s okay to say so now. I respect your decisions.”
The five of them shook their heads in unison. “No, Miss Fox. We’re here because we sincerely want to work at your clinic,” one said.
Another added, “Yes, Miss Fox. We were amazed when we saw you use traditional medicine to stop Mr. Sid’s bleeding. It made us want to learn traditional medicine and transition from modern medicine.”
The assistant doctor added, “I want to be well-versed in both fields and become a doctor who can truly save lives like you do.”
Seeing their sincerity and determination, Melody took out the employment contracts.
“Alright then. You can start in two days. You already know some pharmacology. Traditional and modern medicine may have different roots, but they share the same purpose. You’ll adapt quickly. I’ll arrange for some people to guide you,” said Melody.
“Thank you, Miss Fox!”
Melody smiled. “No need to thank me. We’re colleagues now. You’re all older than me, so just call me Melody.”
“Yes, Miss Fox,” they answered.
Melody sighed, realizing it would take time for them to get used to calling her by her first name. She decided to let it go for now.
After chatting a bit longer, the group left with the traditional medicine books Melody had given them.
Once they were out of sight, Melody was about to close the door to Herbathrive when her phone rang. It was a call from David.
“Hello? David, what’s up?”
But an unfamiliar voice answered, “This guy works for you, right? He broke the most expensive bottle of wine here. Come pay for it now, or we’ll break his hand!”
Melody’s voice turned cold. “Who are you? Where is David?”
“He’s in my bar, Lose Demon. If you’re not here in thirty minutes, I’ll break his hand!” answered the other person.
As a doctor, Melody knew how important hands were. Melody quickly tried to calm the person down. “I’ll cover whatever he broke, just don’t hurt him.”
“You’ve got 29 minutes.”
I’m on my way.
Melody hung up and was about to leave when Talia hurried after her, calling out, “Miss Fox, I just got a call from David.
“I got one too. Don’t worry. I’ll handle it,” Melody said.
“Should I go with you? It might be better to have another person with you.”
“No.” Melody shook her head. “Seventeen still needs care, and it could be dangerous. If you come, I’ll have to worry about you too.”
Realizing she might be a burden, Talia nodded. “Alright. I’ll wait at the clinic for you both to come back safely.
