Chapter 326
The blade slit Melody’s finger, and blood spurted out.
“Miss Melody!” Hattie and Susan were both shocked. They quickly searched for band-aids.
“Shh.” Melody made a shushing gesture and reassured, “I’m fine. The wound isn’t very deep. There are guests outside. Don’t worry about me. I’ll clean myself up.”
Melody was adamant. Hattie and Susan could only suppress their voices.
Susan said, “Then, I’ll quietly get a band-aid for you.”
“There is no need to do so.” Melody shook her head. She used her other hand to press on her injured finger and said, I can stop the bleeding by applying pressure on it.”
Susan was about to continue persuading her when Sid walked into the kitchen.
“Susan, what are you making for…”
Sid was halfway through his sentence when he saw Hattie and Melody in the kitchen.
His expression turned cold for a second, but he quickly returned to normal and smiled.
“So, Melody is here too? I’m so lucky to be able to eat your cooking again.”
Melody did not respond to Sid’s statement. Instead, she asked, “Have you completed yesterday’s punishment?”
Sid was stunned. Two seconds later, he realized Melody was discussing yesterday’s Truth or Dare.
Melody challenged Sid to go for a physical examination.
However, Sid found no reason for a young, healthy man like him to go for a physical examination.
Sid lied, “I’ve had the physical examination. The report will be out tomorrow.”
Melody nodded and said, “Then, I’ll get the report from you tomorrow.”
“Why?” Sid asked in confusion, “Why must I go for a physical examination?”
Melody said while tenderizing meat, “It was a dare, right? Then, why are you asking so many questions? Are you going back on your word?”
“Of course not!” Sid hated it when people claimed he didn’t keep his word. He said, “I was lying to you just now. I haven’t gone for a physical examination yet. Rest assured. I won’t go back on my word. I’ll go after I’m done eating.”
After the brief conversation with Melody, Sid forgot that he had entered the kitchen to ask what they were having for lunch. He turned around and walked out.
When he returned to the living room, he saw Ken and Janet sitting opposite each other.
Janet smiled and asked, “Sid, what’s wrong with you? Why do I feel that you and Melody are especially compatible? You’ve only come here twice, and both times, Melody is here too.”
When Ken heard this, a trace of displeasure flashed across his eyes.
Similarly, Sid was also very unhappy. He glared at Janet angrily.
Sid said, “Don’t just randomly matchmake people. My taste isn’t…” Halfway through his sentence, Melody happened to come out with some appetizers.
Sid stopped abruptly and scratched his nose awkwardly, not finishing his sentence.
However, Sid quickly recalled the bet. He looked at Melody, making some iced coffee in the living room, and said with a wry smile, “Melody, I heard that you lost the bet you made on behalf of Icy Clear Cosmetics?”
Melody’s movements froze. She did not answer him and instead asked, “What are you trying to say?”
“Nothing.” Sid shrugged and said, “Did you come here to cook because you want Ken to help you? Although there’s something you might not like to hear, I still have to tell you.”
Melody stopped what she was doing and turned to look at Sid. She was all ears.
Sid continued, “Ken does have the ability to help you, but his identity is special, and he also has a bastard brother. If he helps you this time, his brother will complain to Mr. Ramon immediately. So, you’d better bear the
consequences of failure yourself.”
Melody narrowed her eyes slightly. “Sid, we only met yesterday. Do you have a deep prejudice against me?” Sid argued, “Didn’t you come here to cook because…” “Sid!”
“Sid!”
Janet and Ken spoke at the same time to stop Sid from continuing his sentence.
Janet tugged at the corner of Sid’s shirt and said, “Stop talking. I believe Ken knows what he should and shouldn’t do. He already has a plan.”
Sid pursed his lips, full of resentment.
It was the same in the past. Whenever he did anything wrong, Janet and Ken would scold him together.
However, he was not the one who did something wrong this time.
Sid looked at Ken confidently and asked, “Ken, what do you plan to do? Will you help Melody?”
Ken glanced at Sid impatiently and said, “She doesn’t need my help.”
Sid thought to himself, ‘Melody has really bewitched Ken. Why did she come here to cook for Ken if she doesn’t need his help?’
As Sid was thinking this, Janet said calmly, “Melody, Sid sometimes blurts out his thoughts without thinking, but what he said is indeed the truth. You were a little rash about the bet. However, since you’re willing to bear the consequences yourself and don’t need Ken to help you, I hope things work out for you.”
Melody smiled cynically. “Miss Murphy, who told you and Mr. Quant that I lost the bet?”
Janet’s heart skipped a beat. She regained her composure and asked, “Is that not so?”
Melody said, “Of…”
Just as she was about to answer, the doorbell suddenly rang.
Susan reacted quickly and ran out of the kitchen to open the door.
Two seconds later, Wilmot appeared.
The moment Janet saw Wilmot, she secretly sneered.
Janet thought, ‘So, Melody actually refuses to admit that she lost the bet. Look, Icy Clear Cosmetics’s chairman has come here to settle the score. The truth is slapping her in the face!’
Sid didn’t recognize Wilmot. He asked, “Who is this?”
Janet eagerly explained, “This is Wilmot Sherman, the chairman of Icy Clear Cosmetics.”
Sid quickly looked at Melody.
He thought, ‘Mr. Sherman has found his way here, and yet you still insist that you don’t need Ken’s help.
Sid’s first impression of Melody was actually not bad. He felt that she was honest and dutiful. Now, it seemed that he had seriously misjudged her.
Melody ignored Sid’s gaze and approached Wilmot. She asked, “Wilmot, why are you here? Did something happen?”
Janet sneered internally but gave Ken a worried look on the surface.
However, Ken did not even spare her a glance. He only looked in Wilmot’s direction with a slightly displeased expression.
Janet bit her lower lip.
Sid was the mouthpiece Janet needed. He took a few steps forward and spoke before Wilmot could. “Mr. Sherman, you should consider carefully before you punish Melody. You can’t come waltzing here without respecting the owner of the house.
Wilmot looked puzzled.
“What do you mean?”
Janet stood up and said, “Mr. Sherman, Melody has just returned to Silverlake from the countryside. She’s inexperienced and insensible. However, since you agreed to her suggestions, you’re also responsible for the bet. You can’t blame her completely for losing, right?”
Janet seemed to be speaking up for Melody, but in reality, she said this to make everyone dislike Melody even more.
Wilmot was even more confused.
However, he knew that Janet was involved in Melody’s conflict with the Lawrence family. Wilmot felt that Janet was causing trouble for Melody, so he simply ignored her.
He lowered his gaze and took out a contract from the folder and handed it to Melody.
Wilmot told Melody, “This is for you.”
Chapter 327
Melody was about to take the contract from Wilmot, but Sid beat her to it.
Although Sid disliked Melody, she was still part of Ximber Tech.
As long as Melody was still in Ximber Tech, she was Sid’s colleague. Sid could not just sit back and allow Wilmot to bully Melody.
Sid grabbed the contract and said without even looking at it, “Mr. Sherman, as Janet said, Melody isn’t entirely responsible for the bet. Why would you give her the contract? Are you forcing her to bear all the consequences alone? I do not agree to this.”
Janet sighed and added, “Mr. Sherman, don’t you know we’re friends with Melody? You should do us a favor and be more lenient with her. When you agreed to the bet back then, you should have expected the possibility of losing. You signed the betting contract yourself. You can’t put all the blame on Melody.”
After listening to Sid’s and Janet’s words, Wilmot finally understood what was going on.
So, both of them had no idea that Icy Clear Cosmetics had won the bet with Silk Beauty Cosmetics.
Wilmot thought, ‘Did Ken also assume that Melody lost, so he specifically brought Melody here to question her?’
Thinking of this, Wilmot raised his voice unhappily and clarified, “You’re mistaken. We didn’t lose the bet. Instead, we won by a large margin.”
Janet and Sid were stunned.
Janet was the first to react. She smiled stiffly and said, “Mr. Sherman, are you joking? We watched the live broadcast. Didn’t Jessica ask you to sign the contract and transfer the company to her?”
“Yes.” Sid was confused. He wondered out loud, “If you won, why did you bring the contract here?”
Wilmot glanced at Sid coldly and said, “Take a look at the contract yourself.”
When Sid and Janet heard this, they quickly examined the contract.
The contract was a position and equity transfer agreement.
If Melody signed it, she would take over Jessica’s equity and position.
“What’s going on?” Janet felt her mind go blank. Her eyes were filled with disbelief.
Wilmot explained, “There was some misunderstanding in the process, which made Jessica think that they had won. Fortunately, with the help of Melody, Mrs. Morgan, and Mr. Lawson, Icy Clear Cosmetics survived and turned the situation around in one go. Moreover, we also exposed in public that Jessica bribed the experts and stole our company’s Golden Water formula. You claimed that we lost the bet. Which part did we lose?”
“This…”
Janet screamed internally, ‘This is impossible!’
Melody looked at Janet’s dark expression and said expressionlessly, “Miss Murphy, if you don’t believe Wilmot and me, you can watch the replay. The entire broadcast is available for replay.”
As she spoke, she dragged Wilmot out of the house.
Janet was unwilling to believe the truth. She turned on her phone and watched the replay.
The live broadcast channel was especially considerate. The video even had a timestamp of when Icy Clear Cosmetics started winning. Janet could accurately drag the progress bar to the part she wanted to check.
When Janet saw the scene of Jessica going crazy, she was shocked to the core.
Janet thought, ‘Melody actually successfully developed a new product that is better than All-Purpose Water. She’s merely a country bumpkin. She graduated from a third-tier college. How did she manage to do this?’
Regardless of how Melody came up with the new formula, the fact that Icy Clear Cosmetics won the bet was a smack to Janet in the face. She had no choice but to believe it.
Janet suddenly understood why Ken’s gaze was exceptionally piercing when she said that Melody had lost the bet.
It turned out that Ken knew all along that Melody had won.
In that case, wouldn’t what she had done just now make her a clown?
Janet felt humiliated. She clenched her fists and did not even dare to look Ken in the eye.
Sid came back to his senses.
Unlike Janet, he clapped his hands in joy when he found out that Melody had won the bet instead of losing.
“Melody is surprisingly capable! I thought she lost.” As Sid spoke, he patted Ken’s shoulder and added, “You already knew that she won, right? Why didn’t you tell us earlier? Janet and I were both worried about you and Melody.”
Ken slapped Sid’s hand away and used the back of his hand to dust his shoulder twice. Ken calmly said, “My words mean nothing. You might as well find out the truth yourself.”
Melody won the bet fair and square. There was no need for additional explanation. She would still be the winner regardless.
The corners of Janet’s mouth twitched as she tried her best to smile. She praised, “Melody really surprised me. I wonder where she got the formula from. It’s really good.” “That’s right.” Sid agreed with Janet. “Ken, did you get the formula somewhere and give it to Melody?”
Ken frowned and explained, “Melody’s specialty is medicine. She developed the formula herself. To get the equipment to make beauty products, she almost died at the hands of the Lawrence family.”
Sid was enlightened.
Sid said, “I see. She’s really awesome then! I underestimated her. I was wondering why you would let someone from a third-tier college join Ximber Tech. So, you knew from the beginning that there was more to her than meets the eye.”
Ken raised his eyebrows. There was a hint of pride in his eyes.
Janet nodded in agreement. However, she felt extremely upset internally as if she had swallowed a fly whole.
At the same time, she felt an even stronger sense of danger than before.
In the past, this sense of danger came from Ken being too close to Melody.
Now, in addition to Ken’s attitude, Melody’s ability made Janet feel threatened.
The ability displayed by Melody had seriously exceeded Janet’s expectations of her.
Janet was regretful for underestimating her enemy.
Ken said coldly, “Melody is one of us. I don’t want such a misunderstanding to happen again. If you encounter anything in the future, you have to believe Melody first and not question her. Do you understand?”
Ken didn’t say this as a friend but as Ximber Tech’s chairman.
Sid and Janet nodded in agreement subconsciously under Ken’s powerful pressure.
As Janet was nodding, her eyes were filled with displeasure and unwillingness.
Meanwhile, Melody and Wilmot were standing by the entrance.
Wilmot updated Melody, saying, “Jessica broke down on her way to the police station. She was afraid that Leo poisoning me would implicate her and make her bear the crime of attempted murder. Therefore, she gave up and signed the contract.”
Melody nodded and analyzed, “From the looks of it, Jessica really had nothing to do with poisoning you. At most, she only knew about it, but she didn’t participate.”
Wilmot nodded in agreement and said, “Tojafrass Aroma is something that only malicious doctors use. The police take this matter very seriously, so they will definitely investigate who was involved. I think Jennie will surely have to pay for this. She will be brought to justice soon.”
“I don’t think it’s that simple.” Melody shook her head and pointed out, “Didn’t you notice that Jennie didn’t appear at all during the entire bet? I think she must have run away when she saw the result.”
Chapter 328
Wilmot frowned when he heard Melody’s words. After a moment of silence, he said, “Halcyon has the strictest laws against malicious doctors. Once Leo tells the police that he got Tojafrass Aroma from Jennie, she won’t be able to run far even if she tries.”
Melody had a bad premonition.
She said with mixed feelings, “I hope so.”
It would be best if the police could seize Jennie. That would save Melody and Quentin a lot of trouble.
However, if Jennie escaped this time, she would be lurking in the dark while Melody was in the light. Melody would have to be on guard against danger at all times.
“Don’t think about it anymore. I believe in the ability of the authorities,” Wilmot comforted Melody and handed the contract to her again.
Melody was puzzled. “Why are you giving it to me?”
Wilmot said seriously, “You won the contract for us. Of course, I have to give it to you.”
“No.” Melody rejected the contract that Wilmot handed her. She waved her hand in dismissal and said, “This is the trophy for winning the bet between Icy Clear Cosmetics and Silk Beauty Cosmetics. I can’t accept it.”
Wilmot insisted, “Silk Beauty Cosmetics should be yours in every right.”
He continued explaining, “If it weren’t for you, I would have never recovered from being poisoned by Jennie and Leo and would have become a demented person under the effects of Tojafrass Aroma. Furthermore, the Water of Time was developed by you alone. Without the Water of Time, we couldn’t have won the bet, let alone take the opportunity to get the formula of All-Purpose Water and expose their evil deed of stealing the formula of Golden Water.”
Wilmot concluded, “So, Silk Beauty Cosmetics is yours. You deserve it.”
Melody was still reluctant to accept it.
She argued, “But…”
“No buts.” Wilmot interrupted Melody and said, “If you don’t accept the contract today, I won’t be able to eat or sleep in peace. Moreover, my ability is limited. I don’t have the time to manage Silk Beauty Cosmetics. But you can. I’m sure that under your leadership, Silk Beauty Cosmetics will definitely turn over a new leaf and be able to compete with us in the future.”
Businesses were unafraid of benign competition.
Businesses could make greater progress with competitors of equal standing.
Melody could not dissuade Wilmot. She finally accepted the contract under his repeated persuasion.
Wilmot said, “I’ll take my leave now. Mrs. Morgan and Mr. Lawson are waiting for me at the restaurant. I came here to deliver you the contract so that I can eat in peace.”
Wilmot waved Melody goodbye.
After the bet, Wilmot finally understood that he wasn’t the most compatible partner for Melody.
Moreover, Melody had always treated him as a friend.
Wilmot was satisfied with being Melody’s friend.
He no longer dared to ask for more.
“Wilmot!” Melody felt that Wilmot felt a little down. She moved her lips and hesitated before saying, “You and Shane should hang out with me sometimes.”
Wilmot’s lower lip curved as he promised, “Sure.”
The two of them looked at each other. Some things did not need to be spelled out loud. Both of them knew that they would be friends forever.
After Melody watched Wilmot leave, she thought about Jennie.
Since Jennie was Quentin’s former junior, her ability must be extraordinary.
Jennie was a threat to Melody. As long as Jennie was not captured, Melody had to be careful. Moreover, Melody had to find an opportunity to investigate Jennie’s true motive for returning to Halcyon.
Melody figured that Jennie’s goal was definitely not as simple as seizing control of Icy Clear Cosmetics.
Melody stood quietly at the door for a while. After sorting out her thoughts, she turned around and returned to the villa.
In the villa, Ken, Sid, and Janet remained silent. Melody had no idea what conversation they had while she was gone.
However, looking at Janet’s ugly expression, Melody could roughly guess what had happened.
As soon as Melody entered the door, Sid shamelessly praised her.
“Melody, why didn’t you tell me that you’re so amazing? You actually developed such an awesome beauty product in just a week. Quickly take a look at me. What kind of skincare products do I need?
Melody was speechless.
She was shocked by how thick-skinned Sid was.
Before Wilmot interrupted their conversation, Sid was righteously warning her not to involve Ken in her bet. Now, Sid turned around and talked to her affectionately.
Melody supposed being thick-skinned was also a talent.
Melody pursed her lips and did not answer Sid’s question. Instead, she reminded him, “Don’t forget about our agreement.”
With that, she turned around and headed toward the kitchen.
Sid looked helpless.
He thought, ‘What kind of weird fetish is this? Melody insists that I should get a body checkup. Is this her occupational hazard?’
Sid was complaining internally when he heard Ken ask, ” What did you guys agree on?”
Sid pulled a long face and said, “Have you forgotten about the Truth or Dare we played last night? She dared me to go for a full-body checkup. What kind of fetish do you think Melody has? It’s bizarre.”
Ken’s expression turned grave.
Melody would not send someone for a physical
examination without a proper reason.
Ken ordered, “After lunch, you should go for a physical examination immediately”
Sid exclaimed, “Huh?”
Sid hated going to the hospital, but he had promised Melody that he would keep his word.
Sid said, “Alright.”
Melody was in the kitchen with Susan and Hattie.
Melody initially planned to cook a feast for Ken today. However, her mood was spoiled due to the sudden visit of Janet.
Melody instructed, “Susan and Hattie, leave the fish and the other meat. Just store them in the fridge. Come over and help me make ravioli.”
“Alright.”
With the help of Susan and Hattie, Melody made a big pot of ravioli.
When the food was served, Sid clearly wore a shocked expression. He nearly exclaimed, “That’s it?”
Melody ignored Sid and looked at Ken. She said, “Aren’t you famished? It takes a lot of time to cook other dishes. Let’s eat ravioli today.”
She predicted that Ken would not be too happy with the food. However, to her surprise, Ken actually happily
accepted the fact that he would be eating ravioli and some appetizers for lunch.
Melody felt puzzled.
She thought, ‘This is strange. Is he in a good mood today?’
He didn’t even scold her for being lazy.
Before Melody could figure it out, Sid let out an exaggerated exclamation.
“Oh my god! Have I been overseas for too long and have forgotten the taste of ravioli? This tastes so delicious!” Sid said as he stuffed food into his mouth.
He looked like a hungry ghost who had not eaten for three days.
Ken glanced at Sid indifferently. He felt that Sid was exaggerating.
It was just ravioli, but Sid made it sound like he was eating some gourmet food.
Melody’s culinary skills were indeed good, but Ken did not think that Melody’s ravioli could impress them.
Ken wondered if Sid secretly had feelings for Melody. Ken’s expression turned gloomy as he thought of this. He picked up a ravioli expressionlessly and put it in his mouth. His first bite yielded a gentle pop as the delicate pasta gave way, releasing a burst of flavors in his mouth.
The filling of the ravioli was a symphony of textures. Ken first tasted the tenderness of the meat and the smooth creaminess of the cheese. Then, he was greeted with the subtle crunch of the finely diced vegetables. After he swallowed the food, it left a lingering taste in his mouth. Ken just indulged in an unprecedented culinary experience. He raised his eyebrows and looked at Melody with surprise in his eyes.
Janet keenly noticed Ken’s expression and she revealed a look of disdain.
She thought, ‘These are just some ravioli.’
She could accept Sid’s exaggerated expression, but she
was stunned to see Ken acting so impressed too.
Janet was reluctant to admit that Ken loved Melody’s cooking because he loved Melody. Janet expressionlessly picked up a ravioli and stuffed it into her mouth.
Chapter 329
As soon as Janet bit down on the ravioli, the delicious juices instantly exploded in her mouth. She actually felt like she was eating meatballs.
Janet had tasted all kinds of delicacies around the world. It was undeniable that the ingredients in Melody’s ravioli and the seasonings she used were ordinary and commonly available. However, Melody used the simplest ingredients to bring out the unique and wonderful taste of ravioli.
Janet was similarly impressed. She even wanted to take a second bite immediately.
Janet came back to her senses. She quickly recalled that this ravioli was made by Melody. Her expression turned cold.
Suddenly, Janet stood up and asked Melody, “Did you put shrimp in this ravioli?”
“Yeah.”
As soon as Melody finished speaking, Janet tucked on Ken’s sleeve and said, “Quick! Quickly spit out the ravioli!”
Sid looked puzzled. “Janet, what are you doing?”
Janet glared at Melody and turned to Sid with a look of disappointment. She asked, “Have you forgotten that Ken is allergic to seafood?”
Sid suddenly remembered that when Ken was studying abroad with them, he had accidentally eaten seafood that looked like beef and almost lost his life.
After that incident, Ken never touched seafood again, so Sid gradually forgot about it.
Now that Janet brought up the past, he recalled that scene and immediately broke out in a cold sweat.
“Ken, are you alright?” Sid did not care about the shrimp ravioli in front of him. He threw his fork aside and ran toward Ken.
Janet quickly reminded Sid, “Don’t come over. If his symptoms are severe, his windpipe will close up. Make some space for Ken to breathe. Hurry up and get the car first. We’ll go straight to the hospital!”
Ken asked belatedly, “Is there shrimp in this ravioli?”
The taste of the ravioli was so layered that he had yet to realize it.
“She already said she put shrimp in the ravioli!” Janet was so anxious that her face turned red. She tried to drag Ken up from his seat.
Melody glanced at Sid, who had walked to the door, and quickly said, “There’s no need to go to the hospital.”
When Janet heard this, she misunderstood what Melody meant. She stared at Melody coldly and said, “What do you mean he doesn’t have to go to the hospital? Do you know how serious his symptoms are when his allergy kicks in?”
After Janet finished speaking, she did not have time to care about Melody anymore and urged Ken to get up.
“Ken, get up. Let’s go.”
Ken, on the other hand, sat firmly like a rock. He did not budge at all.
“Ken, what are you doing?” Janet asked anxiously.
Ken did not answer Janet. He looked straight at Melody and asked, “Why did you say that I don’t need to go to the hospital?”
When Melody saw that Ken was not swayed by Janet and Sid at all, she felt comforted by his attitude. She was also a little touched as her heart skipped a beat.
She ignored her heart and explained, “I know you’re allergic to seafood, so I added a few herbs to the shrimp ravioli. I covered up the taste of the herbs so you would not notice them.”
Hattie, who was standing behind Melody, nodded in affirmation repeatedly. She added, “Miss Melody spent a lot of effort dealing with the herbs.”
“We’re talking. Who are you to interrupt?” Janet glared at Hattie unhappily. Seeing that Hattie had lowered her head, Janet continued, “Melody, I know you are proficient in medicine, but allergies are not illnesses. You can’t
guarantee that Ken won’t have an allergic reaction just by adding some herbs to his food.”
Melody gave Janet a long look and explained patiently,
Ken is allergic to seafood, but not like how most people are. It’s because his digestive tract is inflamed. If I’m not mistaken, Ken, you were not allergic to seafood when you were young, right?”
Ken thought for a moment and nodded. He said, “Yes, I only became allergic to seafood after studying abroad.”
Melody replied, “As I suspected. Your allergy is due to gastrointestinal mucosal damage caused by
gastroenteritis. It causes an allergic reaction when your body absorbs too many food antigens. There is shrimp in the ravioli. However, not only can the herbs I put in treat gastrointestinal inflammation, but they can also protect your intestines to a certain extent, weakening and even preventing allergic reactions. You should be able to tell. You shouldn’t be feeling any discomfort.”
Sid, who was at the door, also said belatedly, “By the way, it’s been almost five minutes since Ken ate the ravioli. In the past, he would react in two to three minutes.”
Janet’s expression darkened. She gritted her teeth and said, “Regardless, it’s better to go to the hospital for a checkup. As for the ravioli, Ken, you’d better not touch it again. Melody is indeed a doctor, but she’s not a god. She can’t be as godly as she claims to be.”
Melody shrugged.
She said, “Suit yourself. If you want to waste your time going to the hospital, go ahead. However, I can take legal responsibility for everything I said.”
Janet quickly looked at Ken and tried to persuade him with her gaze.
However, Ken only glanced at her indifferently and turned to look at Melody. “I’m not going. If you are not going to finish the ravioli, I’ll have it.”
“Ken!” Janet stomped her feet anxiously. “How could you treat your life so frivolously?”
Sid found Janet slightly overbearing and tried to persuade her. “Janet, Ken hasn’t had any allergic reaction yet, which means that the herbs Melody added are effective. Don’t make a mountain out of a molehill.”
“You think I’m making a mountain out of a molehill?” Janet felt extremely aggrieved. Her eyes immediately turned red. Ken frowned and said helplessly, “Alright. Sid, stop talking. Janet is doing this for my own good.”
“Ken…” Janet’s tears fell as she choked. “Just listen to me and follow me to the hospital for a checkup. Ximber Tech can’t survive without you. Without you, we would really be without a leader.”
Seeing Janet like this, Sid had complicated feelings.
Sid, who was an expert in matters of love, sensed something going on after witnessing how Janet behaved around Melody.
Janet was treating Melody as an imaginary enemy.
Sid thought, ‘Hasn’t Janet considered that Ken would not be interested in Melody?’
He sighed and did not say anything else. He felt that Melody was a little pitiful.
When Sid recalled how he had said something unpleasant to Melody because of the bet, he felt guilty.
Sid coughed dryly and decided to be the peacemaker. He said, “Ken, there’s a hospital near your house. Since Janet is really worried, why don’t you go for a checkup there? At most, you’ll just waste some time. There’s no harm in being safe. Just treat it as buying some peace of mind.”
Ken frowned. He was extremely frustrated.
If he had known that this would happen, he would not have let Sid and Janet enter the house.
He pursed his lips and stood up impatiently under their stares.
If he didn’t go to the hospital, he probably wouldn’t be able to eat the ravioli today.
He suppressed his anger and impatience and turned to look at Melody. “I’ll be back in half an hour.”
When Melody heard this, she laughed bitterly internally.
In the end, Ken still did not believe her or her ability.
Chapter 330
Melody thought of the effort she had spent in the kitchen to fine-tune the taste of the ravioli filling so that the taste of the herbs would not overwhelm the other ingredients. She felt even more upset.
However, this was not the first time something like this had happened. For some reason, this time, Ken did not trust her. Melody felt bitter as if she had chugged down a bottle of traditional medicine.
She secretly scolded herself for being a softie. She tried her best not to show her emotions on her face and nodded in agreement. “Since you’re still worried, you should get yourself checked at the hospital.”
As Melody spoke, she pulled out a chair and sat down, eating the ravioli herself.
She had been busy recently and often did not have time to eat. Eating irregularly caused her stomach to be upset in the morning.
As a doctor, she knew very well that she had to eat on time. Otherwise, she would easily get gastric problems.
When Ken saw that Melody sat down and ate the ravioli without any changes in her expression, he felt a little relieved. He then followed Janet and Sid to the hospital. Once the three of them left, Hattie felt aggrieved for Melody.
Hattie said, “Miss Melody, I already told you that Mr. Swanson is an unreasonable man. You put in so much effort for him in the kitchen. But in the end, he didn’t believe you and is even going to the hospital for a checkup. He…”
Hattie wanted to say that Ken was ill-rewarding Melody’s kindness.
However, Hattie did not dare to say it out loud. She was not in a position where she could criticize Ken. Not to mention that she still owed Ken a huge favor.
However, Hattie wanted to say something because she felt sorry for Melody.
Melody listened to Hattie’s aggrieved words on her behalf and continued to eat the ravioli without any strange expression on her face. However, the supposedly scrumptious ravioli now tasted like wax to her.
Melody forced herself to eat a few more bites. Then, she stood up and said, “Hattie, you don’t have to feel sorry for me. Ken isn’t an ordinary person. It’s normal for him to be extra careful with his body. This is also my fault. If I had known this would happen, I wouldn’t have put in the shrimp.” She originally wanted to use this opportunity to treat Ken’s gastroenteritis, but her kindness went unappreciated.
She forced a smile and put on a nonchalant expression. She patted Hattie’s shoulder and said, “Don’t worry. Since you dislike living here so much, I’ll look for a house later. I’ll try to let you move out as soon as possible.”
Hattie nodded repeatedly. “Alright!”
She did not want Melody to owe Ken another favor just because she was living here.
Melody stiffly curved her lower lip and said, “I’m full. I have something to do when I get home later, so I’ll leave first. Please help me tell Ken that if he doesn’t want the ravioli, he can throw it all away.”
“Alright.” Hattie’s heart ached as she watched Melody leave.
At this moment, Susan, who had been cleaning the kitchen, walked out.
When Susan saw the empty living room and kitchen island, she exclaimed in confusion. She asked, “Hattie, where did everyone go? Did they go upstairs?”
“All of them left,” Hattie replied coldly.
But she then realized that Susan was an innocent bystander.
After hesitating for a moment, she explained in a calmer tone, “Mr. Swanson is allergic to seafood and went to the hospital for a checkup.”
“What? He went to the hospital?” Susan asked in surprise. Didn’t Miss Melody say that not only will the herbs in the ravioli help prevent an allergic reaction, but it could also treat Mr. Swanson’s seafood allergy?”
When Susan mentioned the allergy, Hattie’s expression darkened.
“You can ask Mr. Swanson about this yourself,” Hattie said as she started to clear the table.
When Susan saw Hattie pouring the pot of ravioli into the trash can, she quickly went forward to stop her.
“Why did you throw it all away? Miss Melody worked so hard to make this.”
Hattie would not have said anything if Susan had kept quiet. However, as soon as Susan mentioned Melody’s effort, Hattie immediately sped up her movement while mumbling, “Worked so hard? Nah. It can only be called hard work if somebody appreciates the effort. If not, it’s called a waste of effort.”
Hattie cursed internally, ‘Melody is so good, but Ken only treats her like a servant similar to me. He’s ridiculous.’
The ravioli was better off being in the trash can than being placed on the table for Ken and his friends to have more suspicion about it.
“Hattie!” When Susan saw that she could not stop Hattie, she finally felt that something was wrong. She asked, ” What happened just now?”
Hattie replied sarcastically, “It’s nothing. It was just a real-life adaptation of The Farmer and The Viper.”
Hattie added, “I’m not feeling well today. I’ll go and rest first. Leave the dirty dishes here. I’ll clean them up after I’m done resting.”
She then walked toward her room.
Susan was extremely anxious. She was at a loss.
From what Hattie told her, the former was Maria’s trusted aide. If Hattie said something bad about Ken to Maria, Ken, and Melody might not get a chance to be together.
At the same time, Susan was worried that Ken was really allergic. She was anxious as she paced back and forth to the room. Meanwhile, at the hospital, Sid brought Ken to the
emergency department. When the hospital staff found out that Ken was here for treatment, they immediately arranged for the best doctor.
After a round of tests, the results were out.
Ken, Sid, and Janet sat in the doctor’s office and waited patiently as the doctor read the report.
Finally, the doctor was ready to attend to them.
Janet’s heart was in her mouth. She asked nervously, ” Doctor, how is he? Is his allergy serious? Hurry up and prescribe him some medicine. We can’t let his situation worsen.”
On one hand, Janet sincerely did not want anything to happen to Ken. However, at the same time, Janet was secretly eager for the doctor to declare that Ken was having a serious allergic reaction. Then, everything Melody had said in the living room just now would be a slap to her own face.
She then thought, ‘In that case, would Ken no longer trust Melody so much?”
These two thoughts kept fighting in her mind, causing Janet to be distraught.
However, from Sid and Ken’s perspective, she was genuinely worried.
Sid said, “Janet, relax. Let’s hear what the doctor has to say.”
“Hmm.” Janet nodded. The three of them looked at the doctor in unison.
After the doctor finished reading the report, under Janet’s expectant gaze, he said, “The results are out. The readings are normal.”
“How is that possible?” Janet blurted out, but then she realized that what she said was inappropriate. She quickly added, “Ken is allergic to seafood and he just ate seafood. How can his readings be normal? Did you check carefully?” The doctor said patiently, “Just to be cautious, we arranged for Mr. Swanson to undergo a full-body checkup. We’ve
checked him from head to toe. There’s indeed nothing abnormal with him.”
Janet gritted her teeth when she heard this.
She thought, ‘Could it be that Melody is really so amazing that she can even cure allergies?’
A look of dissatisfaction flashed past Janet’s eyes.
However, the look was fleeting, and no one caught it.
At this moment, the doctor said, “However, there’s indeed something that we found that is concerning.”
